It's likely that your car air conditioner is showing its age.Car air-conditioning units create cold air by using a system that takes liquid refrigerant and turns it into a gas, which in turn makes the air cold. After awhile, the refrigerant isn't as effective and the system needs to be recharged. It seems like the car isn't getting cold as fast because the air blowing into the car isn't as cold as it was when your car and air conditioner were new.You'll want to take your car to a franchised dealer for your car's brand or to an independent shop that specializes in car air-conditioning systems to have the system serviced. Be sure to call and ask for estimates and get a thorough description of what the shop is offering with the service, as prices and the exact service can vary widely from one shop to another.

We’ve changed our test to make it easier to see which fridges deliver on energy efficiency claims. In our old energy efficiency test we found few fridges used significantly more power than their manufacturers claimed. So we’ve shelved that test and now use a pass/fail assessment.

By changing our test we can now test more fridges each year than ever before. Our assessment uses the manufacturer’s claimed energy usage. A pass means the measured energy usage was no more than 7.5 percent higher than claimed, anything over that is a fail. Once a fridge fails, we stop measuring. Previously, we would have kept testing to find a maximum energy reading. Claimed energy use is the amount of energy (in kWh/year) the manufacturer says its fridge uses. If a fridge uses more power than claimed, it’s not necessarily bad, just not as efficient as claimed. All the fridges we've tested have been updated to use this new pass/fail assessment. Size, shape, shelves, drawers ... what to consider in your fridge or freezer. It used to be claimed that chest freezers were more efficient than upright freezers, but our latest test doesn’t back this up. Other factors in newer freezer designs, such as insulation thickness and size and type of compressor, can have a much bigger impact on efficiency than whether the freezer is a chest or upright type, or even if it is frost-free or not.

While in general a bigger fridge will use more power than a smaller one, some smaller models we've tested cost half as much again to run as some bigger models. A fridge's "star rating" and annual energy consumption is printed on the label so you can make comparisons in the showroom. All fridges must have the label, but watch for tricks like putting the display card over the top of the label. When you’re comparing freezers and fridge-freezers, it's worth comparing the energy use figures on the labels, the annual running costs from our test or checking the Australian Greenhouse Office website which has a 10-year running cost calculator. A fridge-freezer is always running. While month-to-month you might not notice the impact on your power bill, this cost adds up over the long term. Our analysis shows an extra-large french-door model costs upwards of $5300 including the purchase price and running costs over 10 years — are you still sure you need all that extra space?

To reflect this, the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) and energy-rating labels have been updated. Since April 2010, updated labels have been required on all new fridges and freezers. Star ratings on new models have been wound back by about 2 stars to encourage greater efficiency. (So a 4-star model on the old label became a 2-star model under the new labels.) It doesn’t mean a model is now less efficient – the star ratings have just been calculated differently. (You can use the kWh/year to compare models, too.) Super-efficient models that exceed the current 6-star energy rating can achieve up to 10 stars. MEPS applies to all fridges and freezers made in or imported into New Zealand from 1 January 2005.

All models must use no more energy per year than an amount calculated according to their size and type. MEPS is a requirement manufacturers have to meet. You won't see it on a fridge sales sticker, but better energy efficiency will mean more stars on the energy labels. Check energy ratings at www.energyrating.gov.au. If you focus entirely on running costs (energy efficiency), you could get a model that doesn't store food well. Remember that energy is used in producing and distributing food too - if you have to throw the food out, that energy will have been wasted. We test for all aspects of food storage and we only recommend models that'll keep food in good condition. All fridges can be quite noisy during start up and defrost periods, and make cracking or gurgling noises. But at 36 or 37 decibels, a 400L vertical fridge is not noticeably noisy for most of the time. From 45dBA it could get a little irritating in an open-plan kitchen/living area. New freezers and fridge-freezers are more energy efficient - so if you're buying second hand, newer is better.

Stick to well-known brands under 5 years old, as newer models are much more energy efficient. They’re also easier to get parts for if anything needs fixing. Check the lid or door seal is intact, in good condition and the door or lid shuts properly. Make sure the door is hinged on the correct side for your kitchen (or is reversible). Make sure the interior is in good nick and free from funny smells. Only buy if it looks tidy and well cared for. If you buy a fridge from a second-hand dealer and then discover it’s faulty, you're covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. If you buy privately, you're not. Under the Electricity Act, all electrical appliances for sale must be safe – whether they're new or second-hand, bought privately or from a dealer. Fridges used to be made with and contain environmentally unfriendly CFC gases. Now, they commonly contain "R134a" refrigerant, which does not damage the ozone layer, although it does contribute to the greenhouse effect.
