Find maintenance advice and fixes to common issuesIn 1945 Eden Fumagalli founded Candy. It was the first all-Italian washing machine which was officially launched at the Milan Fair of 1946. The founder's sons, Enzo, Niso and Peppino Fumagalli started washing machine production, making them the centre and the strength of their manufacturing activity. In 1954 Candy made a decisive move in washing traditions introducing the first semi-automatic washing machine with a spinner. Candy opened its first production plant abroad, in France. Six years later, the washing machine became completely automatic. Soon after the Stipomatic, the first Candy dishwasher, was launched. Niso Fumagalli, the originator of most of the patents, was awarded an honorary degree in engineering by the University of Genoa. In the 70s an important new phase started for Candy: that of acquiring other Italian companies, starting with La Sovrana of Parma, a historic brand name in the cooking sector and Kelvinator Italia, internationally famous for its refrigerators and freezers.

Candy also drew up an agreement with Kelvinator America to produce and market domestic products with the American name all over the world including the UK where Candy still owns the Kelvinator name. There was another important advance in the 80s: the international expansion of Candy and the further acquisition of prestigious European companies. Meanwhile in the UK appliances where supplied to the various Electricity Boards of the time under the Electra brand name. A brief history of the group: 1980.Candy acquires Kelvinator UK and its factory at Bromborough, Wirral, England. 1985.Two successful Italian brand names join the Candy Group: Zerowatt, manufacturers of washing machines and tumble dryers, and Gasfire, specialists in built-in cookers. 1987. Candy acquires Rosieres, one of the most prestigious French companies in the manufacture of built-in cookers. 1992. Mayc, a Spanish company producing top loading washing machines under the Otsein brand name was aquired.

1993. Candy acquires Iberna, refrigeration specialists. 1995. Candy acquires Hoover European Appliance Group, which at the time was the European leader in vacuum cleaners with three production plants in Wales, Scotland and Portugal. Hoover was sold to Candy by Maytag who suffered colossal losses due to the infamous "Hoover Free Flights" promotion. Candy now has plants all over the world: China, Turkey, Ivory Coast, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt and Russia. Recently Candy has purchased Jinling in China, Vyatka a washing machine manufacturer in Russia and Otsein. Peppino Fumagalli is the current honorary chairman of the group (2006) Traditionally Candy appliances have, in the UK, been regarded with some disdain by retailers and repairers alike and have been forced to position the brand at the lower end of the appliance market where it resides to this day. This may be largely due to the fiasco with some of the first extended warranties ever offered in the UK in the early 1980's, a poor first washer dryer and the fact that Candy machines are difficult to service.

Candy seems to have struggled in the UK with the core brand name. The purchase of Hoover in 1995 allowed additional washing machine production for Western Europe, or this was the primary reason given for buying Hoover although some industry figures believe it was in an attempt to gain access to the volume UK market. Hoover washing machines today are largely made up from Candy components and designs. Candy moves towards larger load sizes, we think the Grand'O style is ugly though Candy spares are on a par with the rest of the industry with some being massively overpriced, especially electronic and major spare parts. Rosieres spares are very expensive as a general rule despite many of the newer, more standard, built in products being essentially Candy re-badged. Hoover used to have a strong reputation for low cost spares but that has changed and now falls in line with other Candy Group brands. Technical information can now be restricted although not to anywhere near the same extent as some others, such as Bosch, Miele etc.

UK Whitegoods has direct access to Candy Group spares and all the brands, primarily Hoover, Rosieres, Kelvinator, Electra and Zerowatt in the UK. Most commonly used spare parts can easily be found in our store form this link along with many cheap compatible spares as well for the Candy brands. Candy Group products are now almost entirely serviced by an employed engineer base, reports vary one the effectiveness of this. The service is run from the old Hoover offices in Bolton primarily with various regional centres controlling certain regions such as Cambuslang in Glasgow which controls Scotland and the North of England. It is worth noting that several of these regional repair centres have been closed since Candy's takeover of Hoover. Prior to this Candy service was by a network of independent repair agents across the UK as is still operated in the rest of Europe by Candy. The manner with which these agents were allowed to slip left a bitter taste with many service agents and, as a result, many refuse to touch Candy Group products to this day.

It is generally accepted that this caused many independent repairers to enter bankruptcy. Candy offers no training or technical assistance outside its own employees. In general the Candy machines are pretty straight forward lacking in innovation for many years offering only a slight spin on current themes and design but they did introduce the "sealed tub" by accident when they introduced the "Charme" range in the early 1990's. This was a variant of the outer tanks which Candy had used for years, also in the Electra, Kelvinator and Zerowatt branded washing machines which requires the whole assembly be lifted out the top of the machine. This is a very time consuming and difficult job to do and has largely led to the poor reputation with repairers. Cooking products are pretty straightforward with nothing difficult and nothing outstanding about them. Refrigeration, both freestanding and built in is as the cooking products. Fridge freezers and fridges under the Kelvinator brand were extremely popular in the 1980's but appear to have slipped in the UK recently.

As noted some repairers will avoid Candy washing machines and dishwashers as they are considered by some to be difficult with expensive spares that are not widely available and often expensive when they are available as well as poor technical information and backup. In all honesty, this isn't actually completely true. That said the majority of independent repairers will have no issue at all in repairing Candy Group products and you can search for a repairer using the engineer search function.
