estled amongst World War II defence buildings, the campsite officially opens on Saturday 1 October 2016, with bookings already available through DOC’s website. “This campsite provides family-friendly, affordable camping close to Christchurch,” says Andy Thompson, DOC’s Christchurch-based Operations Manager. “Ranked as one of the top ten New Zealand coastal defence heritage sites, Godley Head also offers stunning coastal views, fantastic walking and mountain biking and, as it’s part of the national Toyota Kiwi Guardians network, the chance for kids to earn themselves a medal while they explore the area.” The opening of the campsite is one of several initiatives by DOC to build on Banks Peninsula’s growing appeal as a recreation destination. “We really want to see locals and visitors make the most of the fantastic natural and cultural heritage on the city’s doorstep,” says Andy Thompson. “Other projects we are working to progress include upgrading and opening Te Ara Pataka walking track from Gebbies Pass to Hilltop in late November and establishing overnight accommodation on Quail Island.” T
