These two vacuums are actually exactly alike, except for their nozzles, pet/air turbine attachments and color.
Everything else is the same and you could interchange all attachments, if you had both canisters. After using both vacuums, I think Panasonic should consider either making a model that includes both the power nozzle of this Plush Pro and the multi-surface nozzle of the other canister; or sell the nozzles as parts for anyone who wants both nozzles. The Plush Pro nozzle excels in carpet cleaning, including plusher carpet. It’s heavy and self-propelled and is as good as an upright in vacuuming. It’s also does a great job with heavy rugs and carpeted stairs. Only, the big power nozzle makes it feel very heavy when doing stairs. But that’s where the included air turbine attachment comes in–-it, too, does stairs really, really well and can be attached directly to the handle. Both the nozzle and the air turbine attachment easily suck up pet hair. The Multi Surface Panasonic’s nozzle also does a great job getting up pet hair, but I find its pet attachment useless on carpet. Moreover, if you’re vacuuming long silky type pet hair, you have to constantly pull or cut off hair from the agitator brushes and the two small wheels on the bottom of the nozzle.
This is time consuming. The much larger, more powerful Plush Pro nozzle can handle more pet hair. (I’ll add a picture of the two nozzles side by side after the review posts.)Both models do floors well, too, but I think the Multi-Surface excels in all floors. The Plush Pro sounds like a tank on ceramic tile floors, while the Multi-Surface glides, with its lightweight and super soft bristles. The Pro Plush bristles are harder, typical vacuum bristles. In addition the Multi-Surface has an innovative edge cleaning design, complete with super soft bristles in front of the nozzle that dusts the baseboards! The Pro Plush also does baseboards well, but nothing can compete with the Multi-Surface’s edge cleaning. As a smaller nozzle, too, it fits easier under cabinets and such, but the Pro Plush also fits under cabinets. In addition, the Pro Plush nozzle is more like the nozzles on the traditional canisters with carpet height adjustments. The canisters are heavy on these Panasonics, so they don’t easily perch on stairs and can’t be held while vacuuming.
Thus, even though the telescopic wand extends from two feet to three feet, a long, straight stairway could be a challenge to vacuum. There are three filters--a cleanable pre-filter in the dust cup, a washable sponge one in the dust cup, and a HEPA exhaust one in a drawer in the canister. To me, the HEPA one smells like an air purifier with an ionizer on. I really like that, but some may not. Both the HEPA and the sponge filters are replaceable. The HEPA filter is actually suppose to be replaced when it becomes evenly dirty. Currently, on the Panasonic website, the HEPA filter costs $8, the sponge filter costs $6 and the belt is $5. The dust cup is easy to empty and clean, and complete directions are included in the user’s manual, which is a most excellent and thorough one. Safety features include a motor protector and a thermal protector. So, which model to get? As stated earlier in the review, it’s too bad you can’t get a model with both nozzles, or buy a nozzle by itself. Then you’d have the perfect canister vacuum.
You can, however, buy an air turbine attachment for $25 at the Panasonic website, and I would recommend that for anyone getting the Multi-Surface model, who also wanted a good air powered small attachment. If you have a lot of floors and not too thick carpet, I would indeed suggest getting the Multi-Surface model, unless you think you would be constantly cleaning the agitator brushes due to long hair or threads and such. If you need a canister for lots of carpet, though, including plush carpet, the Plush Pro model might be your best bet. Both models are excellent canister vacuums, because Panasonic tends to excel in canister vacuums. Could be 5 star with fixesWhat's this?Update: 8 months later and it still smells like plastic when I use it.I really like canister vacuums for their versitility and the small swivel front wheel combined with the two big wheels on this model make it look a little more interesting. Unfortunately, I can't give the MC-CL945 a high recommendation. Some of the issues can be easily addressed by Panasonic, so I'm hoping they will read this and make a few changes.
Pros:- Bagless with a HEPA filter and a washable filter. These work well in keeping dust out of your house and out of the motor.- You'll save money over vacuums that require bags.- Emptying the canister, washing the one filter and replacing the other are all easy.- It does turn on a dime, as advertised.- Controls are all placed for maximum ease and efficiency, including retractable power cord.- Suction is good.- The unit is relatively quiet.Cons:- It does a poor job on floors without carpet. This is easily remedied by purchasing a floor brush. I used one from an old Kenmore that looks like Kenmore Canister Vacuum Bare Surface Floor Brush Part # 52682. I don't actually know if this specific part works for the MC-CL945 but it looks the same.- I live near Sacramento and called to see where the nearest authorized service center is, in case it ever needs to be repaired while under warranty. I called the toll-free number and learned the nearest center is in San Jose, 120 miles away. Crazy.- It really smells plasticky when you run it.
