Buyers are heading to stores to bag one before the new EU rules aimed tackling climate change come into force on Monday. Many more powerful models will be blown away when the rules are extended even further – to just 900 watts – in 2017. Why are the rules being brought in? The EU claims the smaller watt models will be efficient and save consumers money but critics argue people will simply use them more often, thus negating the effects of the ban. For the first time, machines will have to carry A to G ratings for energy use, cleaning performance on hard floors and carpets, dust emission and noise. So they are trying to save the planet. Experts have warned that the weaker vacuums will affect asthma and allergy sufferers as the suction will not be strong enough to pick up every pet hair or deal effectively with dust. Critics also claim the weaker models will be less effective at cleaning, meaning people will have to clean up more often and negating any benefits the ban brings. Which models will I no longer be able to buy? The 2,300 watt Hoover Hurricane (around £90) and 2,000 watt cylinder bagless Vax (around £60) are among those that will be banned.
