Check the toe-touch height control on the left side of the tank behind the “power nozzle” -- the broad front end of the upright. It should be low enough to make rumbling noises as you push it across the floor. Step on it to raise it, then tap it one step at a time until the sound changes, indicating the brush is beating the carpet to draw dirt out. Turn the machine over to find out if the drive belt is engaged. It should be tight between the brush and motor shaft in a figure-eight twist. Replace a broken drive belt or reattach one that's disengaged.

Take the power nozzle off the engine housing and check the drive belt, motor shaft and brush. Replace worn belts -- they slip and burn. Inspect the brush and motor shaft. If lint, string or hair builds up around the center of the brush or around the shaft, the fan belt will slip, abrade and wear, all of which cuts down on how much the machine picks up. Cut twisted fibers with scissors and pull them away. Check the brush bristles for wear. Other places to look for tangles of hair, string or fibers are the intake above the brushes in the power nozzle and the turn the exhaust takes into the Mini Em-Tor, which is designed to catch big items. Look at the dirt bag. Kirby designs its bags to collect a specific amount of dirt. The level is clearly marked on the bag. Above that mark, the machine loses suction and leaves more dirt than it picks up. Although the bags are relatively expensive, replace bags frequently for best suction and benefits of the high-efficiency particulate absorption materials in the bags. Inspect gaskets for broken or worn areas that can leak air and lose suction. Replace the big gasket around the bottom of the power nozzle, the round gasket on the engine housing or the Em-Tor gasket between the exhaust port and dirt bag of worn. you can use as a shampooer, it pick up any thing, has a strong suction. I like with the bag. the reason are when the bag is full , you can just throw the bag and put a new one. unlike with out the bag when you empty the container the dust everywhere and most of the time you need to pick some of the dirt or hair what ever it don't go down. so that is the reason i like the kirby because you don't get worry to get dirty your hands. you keep vacuum and no problem... kirby is the number for me. they say dyson is the best I don't think so . that is only my opion. they say shark is the best I don't think so too. shark has no floor hight adjustment. it should be light to use but it happen that when the carpet is high so when you push and pull its hard to do it. it hard to work. same thing to the dyson.i hope all of this opion it help you to choose kirby to buy or get. i am not a salesman i am just ordinary house keeper.
