Take on this task minimally once per week, and in the highest use areas, keep a small stick vac or a broom available for quick clean ups so you don't have crumbs and dirt sticking to your socks or bare feet while you walk through your home in between vacuuming.
If you live alone and are not home often and don't have pets, you may  be able to hold off and do it every 2 weeks. However, depending upon what type of heat source you have (forced air?), you may collect dust and dander in your home even without much traffic. If you or someone else in your home suffers from allergies, be sure to get a good vacuum that has a good filter to keep dust and animal dander to a minimum. You may find you need to vacuum more frequently in this case, especially if there are animals in the home as well. After 20 years of owning a professional residential cleaning business, the best vacuum I have found after trying nearly all of the brands available, is the Kenmore Canister Vacuum Cleaner Model 29319. This vacuum meets nearly all the criteria I have for the perfect vacuum for most efficiency and best price. The only thing it doesn't have is a telescoping wand. For more information about this vacuum and other tools and products I've tested and recommend, you may find the FREE Product Guide that accompanies my book, Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master helpful.
There is a lot to consider when thinking about how often to vacuum. Mainly how often do you really want to pull out your vacuum and actually vacuum. Most of us work and by the end of the day you don’t want to pull out your vacuum. So weekends are the best days to vacuum because you actually have down time.We may sell vacuums but we are not blind to the fact vacuuming isn’t something fun to do for most people. That is why we have wonderful cleaning companies like Beths to make cleaning on us easier and have people who know what they are doing. As well as cordless vacuums like the Riccar Supralite Cordless that make vacuuming very easy. So it depends but at least once a week.Your indoor air quality is up to 5 times worse then outdoor air quality and bagged vacuuming will help that out. I don’t have allergies but if I don’t vacuum at least twice a week my contacts dry out and I feel like there is something in my eyes. Customers with bad allergies and people who like very clean homes vacuum every day.
Of course how often you vacuum is up to you and a matter of how clean you like your home and how convenient it is to vacuum your home. If you have to pull some behemoth out every time you need to vacuum you are less likely to vacuum. If you have to untangle the cord to plug it in or wrap the cord up after use you are less likely to use the vacuum. Sometimes its easier to have a vacuum upstairs and another down stairs.Beth is right the Panasonic/kenmore line of vacuums are a good cheap vacuum to use that should last you a a while and has a good performance as well. Though they will be missed when they stop making vacuums by the end of the year. I am sure kenmore/sears has someone lined up to make their new vacuums. It depends on how big is your family/or you live alone.Unless you have a vacuuming robot (or a live-in maid), this is probably not realistic for you. Rather than give up because you can’t do it daily, make it a priority to bring out the vacuum once a week for a quick sweep of the main traffic areas.
