It uses suitable plastic that need to be cut to 5 X 5 inch squares, and when heated and lowered onto a pattern you want to make, will form around the pattern with good detail.The usable area for a pattern is about 4" square... so only small items can be formed.For my purposes, it works very well and I'm completely happy with it.The only thing to be alerted to is that the heating element and chamber gets very hot and if your not careful would be very easy to burn yourself. This is not a toy, but a quality piece of equipment that does its job well.Most plastic sheets are available in 6X6 or 12 X 12 sizes, so you need to waste some of the raw material to use it to cut it down to size. Splint type dental material is already the correct size, but a bit more expensive than off the shelf plastic.
